December Walk and Roll Cancelled

Due to icy conditions, the
Winter Wonderland Walk
for Wednesday December 11th
is cancelled.

The next Walk and Roll is
Wednesday March 26, 2014.
See you in the spring!

Walking in a Winter Wonderland Walk and Roll Club

Join us for our
Winter Wonderland
Walk and Roll to School
on
Wednesday, Dec. 11th
and walk or bike to school instead of driving.

The holidays are here and we're humming cheerful tunes in preparation for the school concert. Join us to celebrate a winter wonderland by walking to school the morning of our school holiday concert.

Don't let the cold weather slow you down, dress warm and walk or bike to school on your own or join a walking school bus from the Train Station or DiRenzo Park.

Walking buses leave at 8 am. See "Walking School Bus" tab above for the route map.
Students who walk or bike to school receive a special backpack charm.
Stop by the front of the school to pick up your charm.

As the days get frosty remember a wise Norwegian saying,
"There is no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing."

Now everyone sing along . . .

School bell rings, are you listening?
On the way to school, sidewalks are glistening.
A healthy and fun way, we’re happy today.
Walking to school in a winter wonderland.

November Turkey Trot Walk and Roll Club

Thanksgiving is soon. Don’t be a turkey, join the walk & roll club on Wednesday, November 20th and walk or bike to school instead of driving.

Walk or bike to school on your own or join a walking school bus from the Train Station or DiRenzo Park. Walking buses leave at 8 am. See "Walking School Bus" tab above for the route map. Students who walk or bike to school receive a special backpack charm.

Food for Thought:
As you get ready for a day of family, fun and food consider this, 15 minutes of walking at a moderate pace uses about 100 calories. If you walked 15 minutes each way to and from school every day for a week, you would use an extra 1000 calories.

Happy Thanksgiving

October Walk and Roll Club and Walk-a-thon

Join us Wednesday October 9th for the
Every Step Counts Walk and Roll Club
and Walk-a-thon!

How to participate in 5 easy steps:

1. Collect pledges on the forms that were sent home. Get sponsored per lap (for example, 50¢ per lap x 20 laps = $10.00 pledge) or a flat rate pledge (for example, $15, $20, etc.)

2. Bring your pledge form to school. The walk-a-thon will take place during the school day.

3. Earn 5 additional laps toward your total by walking to school on Wednesday morning.

4. Pick up an “I walked to school today” sticker before the 8:25 am bell. Stickers must be collected in the front of the school at the table by the flagpole in order to count the extra laps.

5. Wear sneakers and have fun!

Students can walk from home or join one of two walking buses anywhere along a designated route. See the walking school bus map

Meet at the Netcong Train Station or DiRenzo Park at 8:00am and join your friends to walk together. If you drive, you can take advantage of either of these two sites as a remote drop-off location. Meet other parents at the start points and children can walk together.

New, smooth sidewalks are in place and our crossing guards are available every day.

Attention parents and students, our crossing guards are there to help you. All students must cross the street at the crosswalk where there is a crossing guard on duty. Crossing between parked cars is dangerous, don't do it.

Bike racks are located at the back of the school by the Board of Education building. Wear a helmet, bring a lock and come around to the front of the school to pick up a celebratory backpack charm.

All funds raised will help Netcong PTA provide many exciting educational, enrichment and cultural programs, events and activities for our children.

October is International Walk to School Month.

Celebrate everyday by walking or bicycling to school!

What is the Walk and Roll Club?

On Walk and Roll Wednesdays, students and parents are encouraged to leave the car at home and take walk or ride a bike to school . . .
  • for health
  • for the environment
  • for safer streets
  • for arriving awake and ready to learn
Netcong Elementary students who walk or bike to school on these days will receive a backpack charm. Charms will be handed out in front of the school by the flag pole. Students can walk from home or join one of two walking buses anywhere along a designated route. See the tab at the top of this page for the walking school bus map. Meet at the Netcong Train Station or DiRenzo Park at 8:00am and join your friends to walk together. If you drive, you can take advantage of either of these two sites as a remote drop-off location. Meet other parents at the start points and children can walk together. Let's see if we can have NO CARS at drop-off.

Once you get the hang of walking or bicycling, try it every day.

Back-to-School Bonus - new, smooth sidewalks are in place and our crossing guards are back in action every day.

Walk and Roll Club for 2013-2014

The Walk and Roll Club is back with new events and backpack charms!

Walk or bike to school on your own or join a walking school bus from the Train Station or DiRenzo Park. Walking Buses leave at 8 am. Why walk or bike to school?
There are multiple benefits of walking and bicycling including:
  • increasing physical activity
  • teaching safe pedestrian and bicycling skills to students
  • awareness of how walkable and bikeable our community is and where improvements can be made
  • reducing traffic congestion, pollution and motor vehicle speed near schools
  • arriving awake and ready to learn which leads to improved test scores
