Turn Over a New Leaf Walk and Roll

Join us on 

Wednesday September 23rd 

for the start of a new year of 

Walk and Roll Club events. 

We are making a fresh start of the school year by turning over a new leaf and considering how grow the educational resources in our school and to help our environment.


What is the Walk and Roll Club?

On Walk and Roll Wednesdays, students and parents are encouraged to leave the car at home and take walk or ride a bike to school . . .

• for health
• for the environment
• for safer streets 
• for arriving awake and ready to learn which leads to improved test scores

Netcong Elementary students who walk or bike to school on Walk and Roll Wednesdays will receive a backpack charm. Charms will be handed out in front of the school by the flag pole.

Once you get the hang of walking or bicycling, try it every day.

Attention parents and students, our crossing guards are there to help all of us. All students must cross the street at the crosswalk where there is a crossing guard on duty.

Bike racks are located at the back of the school by the Board of Education building. Wear a helmet, bring a lock and come around to the front of the school to pick up a celebratory backpack charm.

Join the monthly Walk and Roll Wednesdays by walking or cycling to school. 

Stop by the front of the school to collect backpack charms. Be sure to thank our crossing guards who are out there no matter what the weather. 

Why walk or bike to school?
There are multiple benefits of walking and bicycling including:

• increasing physical activity
• teaching safe pedestrian and bicycling skills to students
• awareness of how walkable and bikeable our community is and where improvements can be made
• reducing traffic congestion, pollution and motor vehicle speed near schools
• arriving awake and ready to learn which leads to improved test scores

So you want to be a walk and roll star?

Here's how in 3 easy STEPS:

Step 1: Grab some friends or relatives and walk or bike to school on your own.

Step 2: Join a group walking from the Train Station or DiRenzo Park. Walking buses are informal groups that leave at 8 am. See "Walking School Bus" tab above for the route map.

Step 3: Enjoy the outdoors, have fun and be a walk star.

Students who walk or bike will receive a backpack charm. This will be the last Walk and Roll Club event of the school year so let's make it a good one!

Save the Endangered Stinky Sneakers!

Create new stinky sneakers by walking or bicycling to school on your own or join a walking school bus from the Train Station or DiRenzo Park. Walking buses leave at 8 am. See "Walking School Bus" tab above for the route map.

The benefits of walking and bicycling to school are abundantly clear!  Go outside to get some exercise and enjoy the beautiful spring weather. 

Students who walk or bike will receive a not-so-stinky backpack charm.

Netcong Bike Rodeo

Join us for the Netcong Bike Rodeo 

When: Friday, April 24th 

Time: 3:00-5:30 pm

Location: Back lot of Netcong Elementary School

Who: Students of all ages welcome!

What is a bike rodeo? A bike rodeo helps teach students the importance of riding a bicycle safely.

What to do: Bring your child's bike and helmet. Ride with your child to school, drop off bikes and helmets in the bike rack or join us in the back parking lot after school with your child's bike and helmet. Bicycle racks are located in the back parking lot next to the BOE building. 

Please be sure to lock your bike! Your child will not need to stay for the entire time. Come and go at any time during the event. Free helmets will be available on a limited basis. Any child without a proper helmet or working bicycle will not be allowed to participate in the on-bike riding skills.

Complete All Safety Stations:

Helmet Check: SafeKids will inspect helmets. Free helmets will be available on a limited basis.

Tire Station: Tire safety and air fill.

Bike Inspection: A mechanic from Marty's Reliable Cycles will be on hand to inspect all bikes.

Rules of the Road: TransOptions staff will demonstrate and test students on bike skills including on-road and off-road safety simulations.

April is NJ Walk & Bike Month

April is New Jersey Walk and Bike to School Month and Netcong is celebrating in two ways

Join us Wednesday April 22nd for the 

Every Step Counts Walk and Roll Club 

and Walk-a-thon!

How to participate in 5 easy steps:

1. Collect pledges on the forms that were sent home. Get sponsored per lap (for example, 50¢ per lap x 20 laps = $10.00 pledge) or a flat rate pledge (for example, $15, $20, etc.) 

2. Bring your pledge form to school. The walk-a-thon will take place during the school day. 

3. Earn 5 additional laps toward your total by walking to school on Wednesday morning. 

4. Pick up an “I walked to school today” sticker before the 8:20 am bell. Stickers must be collected in the front of the school at the table by the flagpole in order to count the extra laps.

5. Wear sneakers and have fun!

Join us to Walk and Roll for Cleaner Air. Help reduce air pollution by:

• Walking or bicycling instead of driving a car 
• Turning off the car when sitting or standing at school arrival and dismissal, banks, convenience stores, driveways, and anytime you are parked.

Idling for more than 3 minutes is PROHIBITED in New Jersey  
*with very limited exceptions

Did you know?

• Idling fines in NJ begin at $100 for passenger vehicles and $250 for commercial vehicles.  
• An idling vehicle emits 20 times more pollution than one traveling at 30 miles per hour.
• Only 10 seconds of idling uses more fuel than turning the engine on and off. If you are idling, you might as well be burning dollar bills.
• Exhaust emissions worsen asthma, bronchitis, and existing allergies.
